Overview of the Montfort Annual Meeting 2022-2023
For this first in-person annual meeting since 2019, members of the Association and the public gathered on June 14, 2023 at the Aline-Chrétien Health Hub in Orléans - an innovative model bringing together, under one roof, several health and community partners, and managed by Montfort.
As usual, the evening included reports from the Chairman of the Board, Carl Nappert; the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Thierry Daboval; the financial statements and the report on the state of French-language services; the welcoming of a dozen new members to the Association; and a new trustee to the Board, Ms. Joëlle Clément.
Dr. Bernard Leduc, President and CEO, also presented the Annual Report to the community, which reviews our major successes over the past year, and mentions the challenges we have faced and those that lie ahead. Issues to watch out for include:
- the persistent labour shortage - a common problem across the province and exacerbated at Montfort by the fact that our team members must be able to offer quality care in both French and English. Understaffing leaves many team members feeling fatigued, and we must do all we can to protect our colleagues from burnout;
- the ongoing transformation of the healthcare system, leading to concerns about direction and funding;
- the hospital's financial challenges, as we ended the year with an $8.5 million deficit, one of the largest in recent history, and we already know that the coming year will be financially very difficult for Montfort.
Montfort's main partners also had the opportunity to give an overview of their activities over the past year: the Institut du Savoir Montfort, our knowledge institute, which highlighted its achievements over the past ten years, as Montfort celebrates the 10th anniversary of its designation as an academic hospital; patient-partners and volunteers; and the Foundation, which revealed that it had raised $2,650,000 this year.
Finally, the evening ended with a series of tributes, notably to two great ladies who passed away in 2022, Gisèle Lalonde and Mariette Carrier-Fraser; to Roda Muse, who had to leave Montfort's Board of Trustees after being appointed Deputy Minister of Francophone Affairs in Toronto; and to Adèle Copti-Fahmy, who is completing eight years as President of the Volunteer Association.
Two March 22 Medals were awarded, recognizing the pride, tenacity and exceptional perseverance of individuals or groups who enable Montfort to grow and continue to stand out.
One medal was awarded to Mr. Yves Tremblay, who was president of the largest fundraising campaign in the hospital's history, and who changed the landscape of francophone philanthropy in the region.
The other Medal was awarded to the entire Montfort team for their incredible dedication during and since the pandemic.
The Ilios Award, which recognizes outstanding contribution to Montfort's development as an academic hospital, was presented to Dr. Denis Prud'homme, now Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton, for his role in developing a research culture at Montfort, leading to the creation of the hospital's knowledge institute and the hospital's inclusion among Canada's top 40 research hospitals.
Finally, Carl Nappert paid tribute to Dr. Bernard Leduc, Montfort's CEO since 2010, who will be retiring this summer. We were also delighted to welcome Montfort's future CEO, Dominic Giroux, who attended the annual meeting. Mr. Giroux will take office on July 31, 2023.
