Colposcopy clinic
This clinic specializes in examination of the lower genital tracts, i.e., cervix, vagina and vulva in women with abnormal Papanicolaou test results. A colposcope is a microscope used to examine the cervix under illumination, which fosters an effective diagnosis. This procedure requires no preparation and takes between ten and fifteen minutes. Your doctor will discuss analgesia if necessary.
Nurse's role
The colposcopy nurse first ensures that consultations are triaged so that patients are seen within a reasonable time frame based on their results. When patients come to the clinic, the nurse meets them a few minutes before seeing the gynaecologist. She will ask some questions about their medical condition. The nurse explains what colposcopy or the loop electrosurgical excision technique (LEEP) is, depending on the patient's type of appointment. She also assists the doctor during the procedures and after the procedures, she ensures that the patient is well and provides instruction.
Please note that a medical referral is mandatory.
