New agreement will allow for more research and teaching in French for Montfort doctors

Signing of a vital agreement for the academic hospital 

Ottawa, Monday, June 5, 2017 – Physicians working at Montfort will be able to devote more hours to training future doctors and conducting research in French, following the signature today of the Alternate Funding Plan.

“The Alternate Funding Plan is a contract between physicians, Montfort, the University of Ottawa and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, that provides financial support to medical staff who wish to teach or do research,” says Nathalie Des Rosiers, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier. “Today’s announcement will have a positive impact not only on Montfort patients, students and medical residents, but ultimately on our entire community.”

“Today’s agreement will allow us to accelerate our progress from an academic point of view,” states Dr. Bernard Leduc, President and CEO of Montfort. “This is an important milestone for Montfort to fully play its role as Ontario’s Francophone academic hospital. We thank the Government of Ontario for this gesture of trust towards our institution.”

“Today marks the end of several years of work dating back to the early 2000s, in fact, when the Ontario government introduced alternate funding for physicians working in Ontario’s academic hospitals. We start a new era which will allow us to develop a greater research and teaching capacity,” says Dr. Shaun Visser, who negotiated the plan on behalf of physicians working at Montfort.

“The participation of Montfort’s physicians to the Francophone academic missions of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa is essential and vital,” declares Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. “This agreement consolidates and intensifies the participation to the great benefit of the Francophone communities we serve. This is wonderful.”

“Today, Hôpital Montfort marks an important milestone with the signing of this agreement that will mean more access to bilingual medical services for the people of eastern Ontario, and most importantly, more support for the next generation of Francophone healthcare professionals, and for the researchers conducting vital health research in French,” according to Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “I want to congratulate everyone at Hôpital Montfort and at the University of Ottawa, who worked hard to make this agreement happen.”

Montfort is Ontario’s Francophone academic hospital, offering exemplary person-centred care. The hospital services over 1.2 million people in Eastern Ontario, in both official languages. In 2014, it earned Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, and was designated Best Practices Spotlight Organization by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
