Dominic Giroux appointed President and CEO of Hôpital Montfort

An exceptional leader, he will mobilize Montfort’s teams and partners to meet the future needs of patients

Ottawa, February 23, 2023 – It is with great pride that the Board of Trustees of Hôpital Montfort announces the appointment of Dominic Giroux as President and CEO. 

“Hôpital Montfort is more than ever ready to play a strong leadership role in health care, here in Ottawa and in Eastern Ontario, in Ontario and throughout the Canadian Francophonie.  We are delighted that Dominic Giroux has agreed to lead Montfort at this pivotal time,” said Board Chair Carl Nappert. “Dominic is the perfect leader to help write this new chapter in our history.”

A seasoned health and education leader with 25 years of experience in senior leadership roles, Dominic Giroux has served as CEO of Health Sciences North (HSN) and its research institute since 2017. HSN is the regional academic health sciences centre for Northeastern Ontario. Born at Montfort and a former Montfort board member, Dominic Giroux chairs the board of the Ontario Hospital Association and co-chaired the National Health Training Consortium. He is a Certified Health Leader with the Canadian College of Health Leaders and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. In 2016, he received the Pilier de la Francophonie award from the Assemblée de la Francophonie de l'Ontario.

“What attracted me most to the role was the priority the Board places on Montfort’s status as an academic hospital, the importance of ensuring the availability of French-speaking healthcare professionals for years to come, and the provincial leadership we must exercise as a flagship institution of francophone Ontario. I would like to take this opportunity to salute the exceptional work of my predecessor, Dr. Bernard Leduc. I look forward to meeting with the hospital's teams and partners to define together the future priorities of Montfort,” said Mr. Giroux.

The Montfort Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Dominic Giroux at a meeting on February 22nd, following an extensive nationwide recruitment process. 

“The selection committee was impressed with the number of outstanding candidates,” said Carl Nappert.  “We are confident that we have chosen exactly the right leader for our beloved institution.” 

Dominic Giroux's term will begin on July 31, 2023.

Bio notes on Dominic Giroux 

  • Dominic Giroux has been President and CEO of Health Sciences North (HSN) and the Health Sciences North Research Institute since 2017. This regional academic health sciences centre is the largest health system in Northern Ontario, with 7,700 employees, physicians, learners and volunteers at 15 sites in Greater Sudbury and 17 other locations in Northeastern Ontario, and with a budget of $616 million. 

  • Under his leadership, HSN has eliminated a substantial deficit, performed above the Ontario hospital average on most indicators tracked by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, completed three expansions and a fourth is underway, secured funding to increase bed capacity, acquired a second CT scanner, and is now in the process of implementing a new system, acquired a second MRI and PET-CT, launched digital age and leadership development initiatives, strengthened fundraising, expanded mental health and addiction care and implemented new collaborations with other teaching hospitals for world-class medical imaging. 

  • Born at Montfort and a former member of the Montfort Board of Trustees, Dominic Giroux currently chairs the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) Board of Directors, has chaired the OHA's Labour Relations Committee and Governance and Nominating Committee, has served as Vice-Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, and has served on OHA committees on the financial impact of the pandemic, health research, the provincial budget and government transition. 

  • Dominic Giroux was appointed by the federal government to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 

  • He is a Certified Health Leader with the Canadian College of Health Leaders, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, holds an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors, is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers, and is a mentor to new hospital CEOs.  

  • He has 25 years of experience in senior leadership not only in healthcare but in education as well, including as President of Laurentian University, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministries of Education and Training, Colleges and Universities, and in two new French-language school boards in Ottawa and South Central Ontario. 

  • He served on the Drummond Commission on the reform of Ontario's public services which made over 100 health-related recommendations, the Ontario Economic Advisory Committee, and advisory committees for the Bank of Canada, the Globe and Mail, Hydro One and the Mowat Centre. 

  • He has been a school trustee at the age of 19 and was Chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques de langue française de la région d'Ottawa-Carleton at age 21. He has served as Vice Chair of ACFO Ottawa, Vice President/President Elect of Universities Canada, Chair of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Co-Chair of the National Health Training Consortium, and has served on or chaired more than a dozen other boards in the fields of health, education, mining innovation, public policy, community and economic development. 

  • He holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences with a double concentration in Political Science and Public Policy and Management and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa, as well as an MBA from HEC Montreal.  He also completed the Public Executive Program at Queen's University. 

  • In 2011, he was named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. He has received a Community Builder Award of Excellence in Sudbury and a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club. He has been named by the French government as a Knight of the Ordre des Palmes académiques de la République française for his contribution to the promotion of the French language in Canada, received the annual “Pilier de la Francophonie” award from the Assemblée de la francophonie de l'Ontario, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and an Eagle Feather for his leadership in Indigenous relations.
