Visiting and hospitalization expenses

You must have a valid (non-expired) Ontario Health Card for the provincial health insurance plan (OHIP) to cover services received during your hospital stay, such as a hospital room with three or four beds. Some of the fees that are NOT covered by the provincial health insurance plan are listed below:

• the additional costs of a room with one bed (private) or two beds (semi-private) ($250 per day for a semi-private room and $300 for a private room);
• the cost of medical devices such as crutches, canes, splints, orthopedic devices, etc.;
• the cost of ambulance services ($45 if the patient is covered by the Ontario provincial health insurance plan and the service is deemed necessary).

Visiting and hospitalization fees are covered for residents of other provinces as long as the patient presents a valid (non-expired) health card from his or her province. Although the Ontario health insurance plan covers home care fees for Ontario residents, these services are not covered for patients from other provinces.

Other fees that are NOT covered by the provincial health insurance plan are listed below:

• the difference between the cost of a room with one bed (private) or two beds (semi-private) and a room with three or four beds ($250 per day for a semi-private room and $300 for a private room);
• the cost of medical devices such as crutches, canes, splints, orthopedic devices, etc.;
• the cost of ambulance services ($240 if the patient is not covered by the Ontario provincial health insurance plan and the service is deemed necessary).

Patients from all other countries must personally pay all visiting and hospitalization fees such as admission, visits to clinics and to the emergency department, x-rays, etc. Honorariums for doctors and anesthesiologists are not included in hospital fees and other medical expenses. The fees of all doctors who have treated you are payable to each of them.

Physician fees are extra and are not included in the above tables. Physician rates vary depending on the physician and the current rates set by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan and the Ontario Medical Association.

Will the fees payable to doctors be billed by Hôpital Montfort?

• No, doctors have their own billing agent and send their bill directly to the patient. The only doctors whose payment intermediary is Montfort Hospital are the emergency physicians.

Who will be responsible for the balance of my bill if my insurance does not reimburse 100% of the total amount of my bill received from Hôpital Montfort?

• The patient themselves. It is the patient's responsibility to know their insurance coverage before requesting a private or semi-private room.

Following my visit to Hôpital Montfort, is it possible to receive a bill for a balance of fees?

• Yes, if a billable service has been received (for example, the fee for a mammogram visit) which was not paid on the day of the initial visit, a billing for the balance of fees would be sent by Montfort's accounting department.

If I am hospitalized on a Monday morning and sign the payment responsibility form on Wednesday morning, will I be billed from Monday morning?

• As indicated on the payment responsibility form, billing will be retroactive depending on the type of accommodation received/requested.

Is my place of residence such as my province or country of origin relevant information to provide to the clerk when registering at Montfort?

• Indeed, if you are a patient from outside the country, the billing rate is different from that of a Canadian patient. It is therefore very relevant to provide information about your place of residence when registering at Montfortl, such as your country of origin or Canadian province.

If I change my room choice, do I need to fill out a new payment responsibility form?

• Yes, you must go to room 2C128 to fill out a new form. The new billing will only start on the day the new form is signed.

Why am I billed for ambulance fees?

• Montfort bills according to the standards of the Ontario Ministry of Health. The standards give us the right to bill payable fees for your ambulance transport.

Why am I billed for a room supplement when I didn't spend the night at Montfort?

• Billing is not based on the number of nights. Billing starts as soon as the room is used and then for all other days admitted to Hôpital Montfort.

Why am I billed for a room supplement if I am still in my "delivery room"?

• The term "delivery room" does not apply to Montfort. If you received a room with one bed, this is considered a private room and is billable.

If I only give birth the day after my admission, will I be billed the room supplement?

• No, billing only starts 4 hours after the birth of the baby.

I went to Montfort by ambulance, but my starting point was another medical institution, will I be billed?

• Please contact Hôpital Montfort's accounting department at 613-746-4621, extension 2127 for details on this situation.

I was placed in isolation during my stay at Montfort. During the period when I was transferred to a private room, will the accounting department bill me for the private room during this period?

• No, during the isolation period, the private room is not billable.

I signed a payment responsibility to get a semi-private room. During my stay, members of the Montfort team told me that although I signed a payment responsibility for a semi-private room, it would not be billed to me. Will I be billed for this room?

• By signing the payment responsibility, you are contractually obligated to be billed by the accounting department for the accommodation request you signed for. As indicated on the payment responsibility form, no verbal conversation with care providers takes precedence over this contract.
