Montfort joins the list of Canada’s Top 40 research hospitals

The Ottawa health institution reaches two key milestones as a university hospital

Ottawa, Thursday, October 29, 2015Hôpital Montfort has joined Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals, a list published yearly by Research InfoSource Inc, a leading information source on research and development in Canada.

Since the inauguration of its research institute (Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital Montfort, or IRHM) in March 2012, followed by its official designation as a Group A Teaching Hospital in June 2013, Hôpital Montfort has been progressing steadily as an Academic Health Science Center.

Hôpital Montfort ranks 38th among the top research hospitals in Canada, and is 18th in Ontario. As for research intensity, Montfort fares even higher, ranking 28th in Canada for annual research expenditures, with an average of $147,000 allotted per researcher.

Researchers of the IRHM lead research projects based on an integrated approach to physical and mental health with a particular focus on Francophone communities in a minority setting.

Today’s announcement is the second good news to arise in the last few days, following the qualification of Montfort’s Research Ethics Board by Clinical Trials Ontario, last week. Hôpital Montfort joins a select group of a dozen research ethic boards in Ontario hospitals that follow the highest provincial, national and international standards; qualified boards can sanction clinical trials and health research, for example on new drugs or medical devices. With this designation, Montfort is now a recognised leader for ethical research at the provincial level.

“These two announcements establish our growing expertise in Research & Development and demonstrate that Hôpital Montfort meets the provincial requirements that came with our status as a Teaching Hospital, more specifically the requirement to demonstrate research and academic programming consistent with an academic health sciences centre,” declared Dr. Bernard Leduc, CEO of Hôpital Montfort.  "Research led at Hôpital Montfort, as in all research hospitals across the province, also contributes to a healthier, wealthier and smarter Ontario."

Hôpital Montfort is a Francophone academic health care institution that offers quality care in both official languages and works with its partners to improve the health of communities. In 2014, Hôpital Montfort obtained its accreditation with exemplary standing from Accreditation Canada. It also earned recognition from the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization. In June 2013 the hospital was designated a Group A teaching hospital.
