A successful first Summit on the future of French-language human resources in healthcare in Ontario

Ottawa, February 22, 2016 – The first Summit on the future of francophone human resources in healthcare was held in Toronto on February 9 and 10.  After two days of discussion and reflection, some 60 participants from across Ontario identified possible ways of optimizing the training of future health professionals in order to better serve Francophones in Ontario.

The discussion group included decision-makers from over 30 organizations in Ontario: hospitals, health planning entities and Francophone health networks, community health centres, service providers, high school, college and university educational institutions, health partners and provincial government representatives. Patients also participated in the Summit.

Working sessions focused on three major themes:

  • Identify, prioritize and better allocate the workforce in the health sector
  • Collaborate, innovate and transform training programs
  • Recruit, retain, recognize and plan for the of future Francophone healthcare professionals

While applauding the success of several current initiatives, participants were unanimous with regard to the challenge of offering healthcare services in French throughout Ontario. They recognized the need to adopt a common approach in order to improve healthcare services for Franco-Ontarians.

"Offering health care in Francophone Ontario is a team effort,” reminded the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs and Attorney General, who was guest of honour at the Summit.

A five-year action plan will be developed based on the priorities identified by the participants, with the goal of optimizing the training of future healthcare professionals and better services to Francophones throughout Ontario. A final report is expected by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MHLTC) and will be submitted by March 31, 2016 at the latest.

As the only Francophone academic hospital in Ontario, Hôpital Montfort is determined to assume its role as a leading institution in the Franco-Ontarian community. With this perspective, Hôpital Montfort organized the Summit in collaboration with all of the stakeholders in the Francophone health sector. This was an important step for Hôpital Montfort in fully assuming the provincial mandate it received from the MHLTC along with its status as an academic hospital.

The Summit received financial support from the MHLTC.
