Richard Carpentier appointed Chair of the Research Ethics Board at Hôpital Montfort

Ottawa, April 15, 2016 – Hôpital Montfort, Ontario’s Francophone academic health science centre, is proud to announce the appointment of Richard Carpentier, PhD, to the position of Chair of the Research Ethics Board (REB). He will assume his position on April 15, 2016.

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, Mr. Carpentier will preside over the REB, the entity which oversees the ethical evaluation of all research conducted within the organization and its infrastructure as well as by its employees and among its users. He will also provide support to the Research Ethics Office in resource management and the pursuit of the REB’s specific mandates.

Mr. Carpentier holds a doctoral degree in philosophy from Université de Montréal and a master’s degree in ethics from Université du Québec à Rimouski. Since 2010, he has been a manager for the Research Ethics Board Secretariat of Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. From 1997 to 2010, he was the Executive Director of the National Council on Ethics in Human Research. Prior to this, he held several teaching positions at the graduate level and as a consultant in the national capital region.

In October 2015, Montfort’s Research Ethics Board earned accreditation from Clinical Trials Ontario. As a result, Hôpital Montfort joined a select group of research ethics boards in Ontario hospitals that follow the highest provincial, national and international standards. Since then, Montfort is qualified to sanction clinical trials on new drugs or medical devices, for example.

Hôpital Montfort is Ontario’s Francophone Academic Hospital, offering exemplary person-centred care. The hospital serves over 1.2 million people in Eastern Ontario, in both official languages. In 2014, it earned Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, and was designated Best Practices Spotlight Organization by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.

With its main partners, the University of Ottawa and La Cité college, as well as other post-secondary programs, Montfort is preparing the next generation of Francophone healthcare professionals. In 2015, it joined the ranks of Canada’s top 40 research hospitals through the activities of the Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital Montfort. As part of its 2016-2021 strategy, Montfort is striving to become your hospital of reference for outstanding services, designed with you and for you.
