New Organ Donor Program!

April 23, 2013 - Today Hôpital Montfort launched its new organ donor program. This initiative is the fruit of a collaboration with the Trillium Gift of Life Network, created in 2000 by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to support hospitals in their efforts surrounding organ and tissue donation.

“The staff at Hôpital Montfort is quite enthusiastic about this collaboration to help patients and families go down the path of organ donation, which, by its very nature, leads to the precious gift of life,” shared Dr. Bernard Leduc, president and CEO of Hôpital Montfort.

“Hôpital Montfort has participated in a cornea donor program since 2011 and in its first year, the initiative has enabled 16 cornea donations, a concrete contribution towards improving the quality of life of patients,” said Dr. Leduc. “We are delighted to now be able to participate in a wider organ donor program and make a positive difference in the region.”

In Ontario, more than 1 500 people are waiting for an organ donation that could save their life. In the Ottawa region, 76 people await a donation. On average, only 2% to 3% of hospital patients can become potential donors. A single organ donor can save the lives of up to 8 people and, through tissue donation, improve the lives of 75 others. Persons who wish to become a potential donor can sign up with the Network.

Hôpital Montfort is a francophone institution that delivers quality care in both official languages, within an academic setting and working with its partners to improve the health of communities.
