The Minister of Health gives consideration to Montfort’s status!

November 30, 2012 - The Minister of Health gives careful consideration to Montfort’s status as a university teaching hospital Hôpital Montfort has received an encouraging letter from Health Minister Deb Matthews regarding the hospital’s bid to have the government of Ontario officially recognize the institution as a university teaching hospital.

In her letter, the Minister states that her government "...recognizes that the Montfort is the only teaching hospital in Ontario in which the working language is French and where services in French are available on a full-time basis...we also acknowledge your partnership with the University of provide training to health care professionals in French."

Official recognition as a university teaching hospital duly designated under the list of Group A hospitals under the Ontario Hospitals Act (Regulation 964, R.R.O 1990) is necessary to ensure that future generations of Francophone physicians will be available to meet tomorrow's needs.

Hôpital Montfort fully meets the two criteria set out in the regulations:

1. An affiliation agreement with a recognized Faculty of Medicine in Ontario.

2. Recognition by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with respect to the validity of post-graduate instruction in obtaining a certification in one or more specialties recognized by the College.

Hôpital Montfort, in the 2001 Ontario Court of Appeal judgment, was entrusted with a mandate to maintain the French language, transmit francophone culture, promote solidarity among the Franco-Ontarian minority and play an essential role in preventing any form of assimilation.

The hospital's teaching role was acknowledged and, in fact, constituted a major element in justifying opposition to its closure. In order to successfully fulfill this mandate, the hospital must therefore receive official recognition for its teaching and research role from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Montfort’s Board of Trustees is delighted to learn of the government’s position and is encouraged by Minister Matthews’ intention to work in collaboration with Hôpital Montfort to resolve the significant administrative and financial challenges surrounding this file, as outlined in her letter

The official designation for the only francophone university teaching hospital: a priority for the Franco-Ontarian community.
