Hôpital Montfort to present its “Médaille du 22 mars” to Mauril Bélanger
OTTAWA, March 21, 2016 – Montfort, Ontario’s Francophone Academic Hospital, presents its highest recognition, the "Médaille du 22 mars" to the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier and a tireless defender of the rights of Francophone minority communities. The medal will be presented to Mr. Bélanger during the Annual General Meeting of Hôpital Montfort's association, on Wednesday, June 15.
The medal was created in March 2004 by Hôpital Montfort as a symbol of determination, tenacity and pride.
The medal recognizes the lasting importance of the date of March 22, 1997, when over 10,000 supporters of the hospital filled the Ottawa Civic Centre. They were responding to the S.O.S. Montfort call, just 26 days after an announcement that Montfort would be closed.
Emphasizing the symbolism of that date, only 22 medals were created, to be presented by recommendation of the hospital’s Board of Trustees to individuals or groups whose efforts represent the three qualities that were essential to the successful campaign to preserve Hôpital Montfort. Since its inception in 2004, only nine medals have been awarded.
Hôpital Montfort is a Francophone academic health institution that provides quality care in both official languages and works with its partners to improve the health of communities. Montfort is designated a Group A teaching hospital. It obtained its accreditation with exemplary standing from Accreditation Canada and has also been recognized as a Best Practices Spotlight Organization by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO).
