OTTAWA, August 17, 2016 – It is with heavy hearts that Montfort learned of the passing of a great friend of the hospital and of the Francophonie. The Honourable Mauril Bélanger passed away on August 16, 2016 at the age of 61, after a courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Mr. Bélanger represented Ottawa-Vanier constituents for over 21 years. He was known as a tireless defender of the rights of Francophone minority communities and of linguistic duality in Canada.

On June 15, 2016, Hôpital Montfort awarded the Médaille du 22 mars to Mr. Bélanger to recognize his determination, tenacity and pride throughout his entire career, including during the SOS Montfort cause.

“On behalf of the entire Hôpital Montfort team, I wish to offer my most sincere condolences to his wife Catherine, his family, his friends, his colleagues and his community. Mauril’s passing is an important loss for the Franco-Ontarian community and for Montfort,” explained Dr. Bernard Leduc, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hôpital Montfort.

Hôpital Montfort’s flags will fly at half-mast until sunset in the day of Mr. Bélanger’s funeral or memorial service.
