Hôpital Montfort awards Mauril Bélanger the “Médaille du 22 mars”
Ottawa, June 16, 2016 – Hôpital Montfort awarded the Médaille du 22 mars to the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier and a tireless defender of the rights of Francophone minority communities, during ceremony held on June 15, 2016.
Created in 2004, the medal recognizes the lasting importance of the events of March 22, 1997, whereas over 10,000 supporters of the hospital filled the Ottawa Civic Centre. They were responding to the S.O.S. Montfort call, just 26 days after an announcement that Montfort would be closed.
Out of the 22 medals in existence, only nine had been presented to date, by recommendation of the Hospital’s Board of Trustees, to groups or individuals who are a symbol of determination, tenacity and pride, three qualities that were essential to the successful campaign to preserve Hôpital Montfort.
Prior to the award ceremony, the Association de l’Hôpital Montfort held its Annual General Meeting (AGM). The public meeting was the occasion to revisit the hospitals achievements and challenges during 2015-2016. The annual report to the community presenting the results of the activities of the Hôpital Montfort in 2015-2016 is available online at rapportannuel.hopitalmontfort.com.
Hôpital Montfort is Ontario’s Francophone academic health science centre, offering exemplary person-centred care. The hospital serves over 1.2 million people in Eastern Ontario, in both official languages. In 2014, it earned Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, and was designated Best Practices Spotlight Organization by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
