Montfort among the top 40 research hospitals for the 11th year in a row

Ottawa, December 4, 2025 – Montfort, Ontario’s Francophone academic hospital, is one of the top 40 research hospitals in Canada—for the eleventh year in a row.

The list of top-ranking research hospitals is compiled by Research InfoSource Inc., a Canadian firm specialized in research and development information, for the Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals report.

Montfort first joined the list of leading research hospitals in Canada in 2015—and has been on it every year since. It’s a record year in terms of the number of grant applications submitted by the Institut du Savoir Montfort’s research teams, to both internal bodies and national organizations, such as the Canada Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

"The growth in our activities is a testament to our commitment to expanding the impact of research,” said Estelle Ethier, Vice-President, Teaching and Research at Montfort, and Chief Executive Officer of the Institut du Savoir Montfort (ISM), the organization responsible for coordinating research, clinical internships and continuous professional development at the hospital. “The appointment of five research chairs in the last year—three in family medicine, one in artificial intelligence and mental health, and one in language as a health determinant—contributes to distinguishing Montfort and making the hospital and the institute sought-after environments.”

“By increasing the volume and quality of our research activities, Montfort continues to assert its role as a key player in health research,” added Dominic Giroux, President and CEO of Hôpital Montfort and copresident of the Ottawa Academic Health Network. “Our clinical and research teams continuously innovate and push boundaries, for healthy communities. We’re very proud of this.”

Under the 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, Montfort aims to increase the volume and quality of its research activities with the goal of disseminating new knowledge to improve care.

The Institut du Savoir Montfort has nine research chairs and 143 member researchers, including 72 clinician-scientists. The ISM’s research activities total $13.4 million, enabling it, among other things, to conduct 176 research projects and 13 clinical trials, currently underway.

Montfort, as a member of the Ottawa Academic Health Network (OAHN), is part of a research community that continues to demonstrate national leadership. In 2025, all OAHN institutions were once again ranked among Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, marking the eleventh consecutive year the network has achieved this distinction. This collective performance highlights the strength of Ottawa’s integrated academic health ecosystem and the enduring partnership between the University of Ottawa and its affiliated research hospitals. Together, OAHN institutions increased their overall research spending by 14.6%, reaching $256.6 million and reinforcing Ottawa’s position as one of Canada’s most dynamic centres for life sciences research and innovation.
